SAS! Hailey Weekly Blog
Each week, we will use this platform to share with you the topics we have been exploring, the questions we are asking, and the fun we are having!  We'll also work to incorporate resources you can use at home, and background information on any "challenges" we have the students tackling.  Enjoy!

SAS! Final Presentations PDF Print E-mail

Well, the final presentation were made. We learned a lot from this day, especially Miss Kellie. We were too busy for photos, but we were excited to present to our parents. Thank you for coming to see our posters. We tried our best to tell the story of our experiments. We learned that presentations can be scary and make us nervous, but that we shouldn’t be scared. We had fun making the graphs and telling the story of the bugs we collected in the Big Wood River. Most of all we learned that science can be fun and that invertebrates tell a story of the health of a river.

In this, the second portion of our experiment we went to the field to collect round two of data. We were curious about where in the river held more aquatic invertebrates. Bigger rocks, smaller rocks? Deep water, shallow water? We collected samples to look at in the “lab” aka the cafeteria. We looked at the invertebrates collected last week so we couldn’t wait to see what we collected today!

SAS! Hailey Week Eight PDF Print E-mail

This week we went into the field to collect data. We are doing an experiment to see what part of the river has more invertebrates. We are wondering if deep water and big rocks have more invertebrates than shallow and small rocks. We had two of our parents come to help and that was cool. We all walked down Elm St. to the Big Wood River.

This week we played a game called Macro Mayhem. It taught us about the different aquatic invertebrates that live in rivers. Each one has a different tolerance for pollution and change. We were each different kinds of invertebrates and had to try and get past the environmental stressor to the other side of the river.

This week in SAS! we explored water quality. We collected tap water samples from both Ketchum and Hailey that came from well and city  sources. We learned how to be safe while conducting water quality tests. We used a conductivity meter to see how much potential the water has to conduct electricity. We tested for pH, nitrates, and phosphates. We tested for hardness (how much minerals are in the water) with Kellie. There was so much to do in so little time that we didn’t get our pictures taken.
