The ERC has created this section to help people better understand our community's solid waste efforts, including recycling and what they can do to change things. If you'd like to get involved, please sign up for our recycling alerts (your email address will not be shared).

The ERC receives over 600 calls each year about recycling.  Many have interesting questions and stories about their own personal recycling efforts.  If you'd like to share an idea, a story or even a complaint about how our community can improve its solid waste efforts, we'd like to hear from you.  Simply add your comments in the section below.

i think the local dump here in blain county is a complete joke. all the glass that gets recycled just gets crushed then put into the ground? whats the point in that?? people think there recycling but there not. it gets mixed with wood and everythign else. i also think theres rules that need to be changed.. people that work there get to rumish and take what they like and get paid for doing it. local people cannot salvage materials. i was told that its cause they didnt want anyone getting hurt. the only reason someone could get hurt is the way they ridiculously stack the cars, theres no reason for that. i used to go up there all the time and recycle tires, wood, and metel or anything else i thought i could use. i know you could build houses with the amount of lumber that just get smashed then barried with glass. theres tons of parts and othere things that could be used that just get destroyed and stacked up then re crushed. is there any way the rules could be changed?
  • Craig - Recycling Glass is Worthwhile -- here's why...
Recycling glass here in the Valley actually makes LOTS of sense. Doing so keeps us from needlessly trucking glass (which is very heavy) some 110 miles to Burley just so it can sit in a high tech municipal solid waste landfill. It saves lots of fuel, is inert so doesn't represent any threat to our groundwater and sometimes this crushed glass is used as aggregate instead of commercially bought gravel.

So while glass is technically being diverted from our waste stream, it still makes TONS of sense to put it in the recycling bin.

your right craig, you have some really good points there. it does save alot of money in fuel, but putting it into the ground and calling it recycling isnt right ethier. what do u think about the rules about being able to salvage wood. tires, and metel?
  • Craig
I understand your point, John. The term "recycling" has become a catch-all for what one does if you do NOT throw something in the trash. When you think about conveying all these issues to the public, things have a tendency to get "boiled down". As long as it's for the benefit of our health and our environment, I support it. If something better comes along, I'll get behind that as well.

Not sure about the salvaging rules. Shot me a link or email me at craig at ercsv.org
