Hut Meister: JP Preuss

JP relatively new to the Environmental Resource Center, but he’s been working with the backcountry hut system since 2010. He started as an intern and worked his way into guiding ski and rock trips throughout Idaho’s central mountains, while helping care for and steward the huts.

JP is a AMGA-certified ski and rock guide with a strong passion for mountain weather and a deep fascination with how weather influences avalanches. He holds degrees in Outdoor Education and Biology, which continue to inform how JP guides, teaches, and cares for these landscapes.

When the Environmental Resource Center acquired the hut system, it was a full-circle moment for JP. Today, JP’s focus is on the long-term health of the hut system and strengthening the huts as outdoor classrooms—places where people can connect with the ecosystems that support year-round mountain recreation.
